Imagine this. You are all packed and ready for the road trip you've been looking forward to for months. You've checked your list several times and everything's packed, the pets are being cared for and the kid down the street promised to mow the lawn at least once. Everything is perfect! You put your key in the ignition, but the car won't start. It just sort of sputters. Or maybe it starts going thump. Thump. THUMP. As you try and back out of the driveway. Nothing, and I mean nothing can damper the spirits like a problem with your car when you’ve got somewhere to go. Luckily, a little bit of checking beforehand and chances are good that you'll not only catch any little problems, but also prevent them. Don't wait until the last minute, start checking these things a few weekends ahead so if you do have something that needs to be replaced, you've got plenty of time to do it. So what needs checking?
If you aren't handy under the hood (and lucky for me, Mr. Disney Magic is!) schedule an appointment with your mechanic for a look over. It's usually not expensive and you'll have the comfort of knowing before you hop in, that your car is ready to roll! Basic maintenance can not only make your car perform well, but make it last longer, too. Do you do a pre-trip check on your car? Any things to look for that I left out?

Amen to the windshield washer bit. Especially if you are traveling a road you have never been on before. I was driving with my brother cross country years ago. It was dusk and we were driving through Truth or Consequences New Mexico. It was beautiful countryside but out of nowhere millions of moths or butterflies or something come flying into the road. Apparently its a nightly event that time of year. In a matter of seconds our windshield was covered and we could not see a few feet in-front of our hood. I turned on my wiper and it made it worse or course, and when I tried to spray fluid I was rewarded with a few measly drops from an empty reservoir. The swarm was only lasted a few minutes but the damage was done. Long story short, drivers window rolled down, head out window like a dog and five miles to nearest gas station. We were not the only ones using the squeegee that night.

Lesson learned! Your story was so vivid though, I couldn't help but laugh!
