Spotlight Sunday: Walt's Life Told Through The Greatest Showman

5/10/2020

Those of you who know me well know how much I love Disney. That's why I blog to help people take their dream trip, for less, and answer questions in simple tried and true ways. It's not the theme park only that I love though, it's Roy and Walt's inspiring story. It's the history and stories behind everything, it's how no matter how hard things were, Walt never stopped moving forward and trying. Even as he lay, hours from death he was telling Roy how to finish things. That feeling is there in the Parks, it's not just rides. It's the brothers. The impulsive one who never stopped dreaming, and the responsible one who never stopped making those dreams come true.

This video was amazing, but the cough at the end...my goodness. What did you think, after you watched it?

How to Stay Healthy ANd Injury Free during Your Disney Vacation

Isn't is the best feeling of all to pull into your Resort parking lot on the first day? You've got that whole trip ahead of you, and you want to make the most of it! Unfortunately, Life likes to interfere with the best plans. We've gone through illness and injuries just before arriving and during our Disney trips, so we've picked up a few strategies along the way. While there's no foolproof way to avoid getting hurt or sick at Disney, there are some precautions you can take to improve your chances of being healthy and enjoying your trip!

Get into a pre trip walking routine

With massive fun filled parks, it's easy to talk ten miles a day or more when visiting Disney World. Starting a walking routine a month or so before you go will make all the difference between having the hustle you need when your fastpass time slot is about to run out, and collapsing on the grass in front of Cinderella's Castle. That walking routine might just also save you from a pulled muscle or foot cramps.

Wash your hands before you eat

You've been touching stuff! Your kids have been touching stuff! And so have the other tens of thousands of people visiting Hollywood Studios that day. All that touching, and nose picking, and coughing and touching and not watching their hands after using the restroom, well...you get the idea. There's a LOT of germs on your hands. So grab your food, find a table and take turns washing up. Hand wipes are god in a pinch, but there's nothing as good as soap and water to remove germs.

Be aware of your surroundings

It is VERY easy to step off a ride and roll your ankle. On a trip that requires a lot of walking each day, that can be a disaster. it's also easy to have a stroller run over your foot, or bump into a scooter that stops suddenly when someone darts in front of them.

It's incredibly important that you are aware of your surroundings. If your eyes are stuck to your phone, the park map, or counting the money in your wallet, you might get injured. Always look where you are walking, and watch out for the unexpected, like a child running in front of you, a scooter stopping, or someone else on their cellphone, reading their park map and not looking where they are walking.

Eat healthy

The great thing about Disney is that you can bring in your own food, so whether it's from the grocery store, or the Resort snack bar, there's a lot of healthy stuff you can bring! A few servings of fruits and veggies amidst all the french fries and cupcakes makes a huge difference in your energy levels, and health!

Drink Plenty

Drinking is really important at Disney, maybe the most important along side of washing our hands because it's very easy to get dehydrated, and not realize it. We talk about some of the warning signs here.

You are walking more, so your body needs more to drink! It doesn't have to be $6 for a bottle of water each time you need one. Disney will give you cups of water for free, but you can also check out this article to save hundreds on drinks at Disney.

Pack a few medicines

We've talked before about our mini first aid kit and why it's so important. That thing has come in handy so much! We also keep a few Advil with us, you never know when a headache from the sun, or tired feet or a skinned knee needs a little assist. Small and portable, these are easy to keep in a park bag!

Treat problems while they are minor

One of our last pieces of advice is treat your problems while they are minor. Stop for a moment and put a bandaid on that toe that's rubbing funny on your shoe, BEFORE it turns into a blister. Take the time to put on sunscreen BEFORE you or your child gets a massive burn and feels awful all week. Stop and get a cup of water BEFORE you are so hot and thirsty you get heat stroke.

Know when to rest

It's easy to want to go go go and do it all at Disney. Who doesn't want to get their money's worth? you've got to think smart though! Take a break when you or someone else in your party needs one. Want to see stuff AND take a break? Go to a show. There will be air conditioning and you can sit for a while. Sometimes that's enough, if not, head back to your resort for a few hours. Remember, a Disney trip isn't fun if you aren't enjoying yourself!
